A Most Wonderful Year

It is truly an extraordinary time. With the current events going on in the world, a neutral would be munching down on their popcorn as we speak. Unfortunately, everyone that resides on this earth is not neutral. One event that is yet to come is the US Presidential Election. With their politics and society as contentious as it is, I hope courtesy prevails.

It is perhaps the only election in the world that everyone follows. The consequences of the election will be far-reaching and one can bet it will be a spectacle. The political climate in the USA has become polarized to such a degree that mocking it would be akin to beating a dead horse. I do not know why I am even writing this. Perhaps it’s an aimless piece or perhaps it’s a piece that only seeks to quell my fears for the future, in which case this is anything but aimless.

It could possibly be due to my own vanity. It is an historic time, and I will be nowhere near it. I am just a bystander in this election. Maybe with this piece, I can look back at it with a glimmer of pride knowing that my involvement was minimal yet present.

The election is tomorrow and the tension is palpable. I see it online, in between running my errands even with my close ones. Although we speak in jest about the absurdness it is a coping mechanism to mask my own anxiety. Some say Civil War will be upon us as soon as the results of the election are announced. I say let’s be optimistic. I choose to believe that Americans will be respectful. They will respect the democratic process that they so greatly rave about. While everyone else around the world awaits mass chaos, I hope the American citizens surprise us all. That their belief in their institutions is still strong, despite their polarized politics.

I ask them to be introspective and reflective. I urge them to be kind, compassionate and tolerant. For if they succumb to their emotions, then we are all guilty for this debacle.
